A fight ensued. There happened to be a vegetable stall with lots of tomatoes. In a chaotic fight people started grabbing tomatoes and throwing them at each other. For whatever reason the town rekindles the tomato fight year after year. The event was banned several times during Spain's Franco dictatorship. But that didn't stop the city from eventually becoming an official event after the end of Franco's regime. It became popular in Spain and internationally during the 1990s. The event has attracted more than 100 attendees over the years.
But the town decided in 2012 to limit participation to 10,000 people for safety and C Level Contact List economic reasons. What the hell is going on during ketchup? Is it just throwing in some tomatoes? Well mostly yes. But the festival does start with a fun and popular competition called รณ. Now imagine a big, greasy pole as tall as a two-story building. A piece of ham is placed on top. it requires a lot of agility and courage. This is more difficult than it sounds. Few people have succeeded in getting ham in recent years.
Anyway the event organizers kept the game going for about an hour starting around 1am. At one o'clock in the morning the guns rang out and the trucks started coming. Super ripe tomatoes arriving by truck, of course. They rolled into the pueblo square in the center of town and dumped tomatoes. That's when the battle begins. It's free for anyone who can grab as many tomatoes as possible and then start throwing them at anyone and everyone. The truck then drove around the center of town to drop more munitions.
